"O Turco" foi uma máquina que, supostamente, jogava xadrez de forma automática. Construído pelo engenheiro húngaro Wolfgang von Kempelen em 1769, o suposto autômato assombrou a Europa, tendo vencido quase todos os seus adversários nos 84 anos seguintes.

("The Turk" was a machine that, supposedly, played chess automatically. Built by Hungarian engineer Wolfgang von Kempelen in 1769, the supposed automaton haunted Europe, having beaten almost all its opponents during the following 84 years.)

Anos depois da destruição do Turco em um incêndio, o truque foi finalmente revelado: havia sempre um operador, que ficava escondido sob o tabuleiro e era o cérebro por trás dos lances. Neste jogo contra Napoleão Bonaparte, o Turco foi operado por Johann Allgaier.

(Years after the Turk's destruction in a fire, the trick was finally revealed: there was always an operator, who was hidden under the chessboard and was the brain behind the moves. In this game against Napoleon Bonaparte, the Turk was operated by Johann Allgaier.)
