Geometria – Um triângulo e um círculo

Na figura acima, o círculo está inscrito no triângulo ABC, e ID é perpendicular a BC. Qual é a área do triângulo ABC?

(In the figure above, the circle is inscribed in the triangle ABC, and ID is perpendicular to BC. What is the area of the triangle ABC?)

  1. First, we notice that the circle intersects sides AC and AB and label those points of intersection E and F, respectively. We’ll need these labels later.

    For now, though, we need to calculate the measures of the angles. For this, we imagine segments joining the center of the circle to points B and C; this would make two right triangles. These segments would also bisect ∠B and ∠C. Therefore, we have the following:

    (1/2)m∠B = arctan (15/26)
    (1/2)m∠C = arctan (15/25) = arctan (3/5)

    There is a formula that is used to calculate the tangent of a sum, and it looks like this:

    tan (u+v) = (tan u + tan v)/(1 – tan u tan v)

    We use this formula to calculate the sum of the measures of ∠B and ∠C:

    m∠B + m∠C = 2[arctan (15/26) + arctan (3/5)]
    m∠B + m∠C = 2[arctan ((15/26 + 3/5)/(1 – (15/26)(3/5)))]
    m∠B + m∠C = 2[arctan ((75 + 78)/(130 – 45))]
    m∠B + m∠C = 2[arctan (153/85)]
    m∠B + m∠C = 2[arctan (9/5)]
    m∠B + m∠C = 2[π/2 – arccot (9/5)]
    m∠B + m∠C = 2[π/2 – arctan (5/9)]
    m∠B + m∠C = π – 2 arctan (5/9)

    But, since the sum of the measures of angles A, B, C is π radians:

    π – m∠A = π – 2 arctan (5/9)
    m∠A = 2 arctan (5/9)
    (1/2)m∠A = arctan (5/9)

    Now, we use this result to calculate lengths AE and AF:

    AE = AF = 15/[tan (arctan (5/9))] = 15/(5/9) = 27

    So, the sides of the triangle have lengths 51, 52, and 53.

    There is a formula for calculating the area of a triangle with three given side lengths. It’s also known as Heron’s formula and it looks like this:

    A = √[s(s – a)(s – b)(s – c)]

    where a,b,c are the triangle’s side lengths and s is half its perimeter.

    So, using Heron’s formula with our given side lengths, we obtain:

    Area = √[(78)(25)(26)(27)] = √[(5)²(9)²(26)²] = 5*9*26 = 1170

    My answer: 1170 square units
