Black can defend by moving the c5-knight (this opens the a7-bishop's guard of d4 and e3). A random move of this knight allows both 2 Qf5 and 2 Sb4, one correction 1 ... Sa6 forces 2 Qf5, another correction 1 ... Sd7 forces 2 Sb4 (and 1 ... Kxc4 allows 2 Qb3), but the third correction 1 ... Sd3! refutes. The key 1 Sf5! threatening the indirect battery play 2 Se3 almost completely changes the play. As with the try-play, any move of the c5-knight defends, but all such moves allow 2 Se7. The flight granted by the key (1 ... Ke6) allows 2 Se3 (distinct from the threat in that this is a direct battery play), and 1 ... Qe6 selfblocks, allowing 2 Rd4. The other king flight, 1 ... Kxc4, allows 2 Qb3, the only mate that is unchanged from the try-play.

Another fine example of dual avoidance.jrh150482https://www.blogger.com/profile/10502831081969372299noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-38193052.post-28935264977545552942018-02-03T00:52:59.479-02:002018-02-03T00:52:59.479-02:00About the creator of this problem: it is the Brazi...About the creator of this problem: it is the Brazilian teacher Augusto Guilherme Meschick.

Born on October 29, 1868, he taught German language in Pedro II High School and some private institutions in Rio de Janeiro.

Teacher Meschick was a chess enthusiast, composed hundreds of problems, and wrote chess sections in some Rio de Janeiro daily newspapers.

He passed away on January 29, 1921, leaving widow Maria Josephina da Silveira Meschick, and two daughters (Dora and Elza).

(Some of the above information was taken from his obituary in the newspaper "Correio da Manhã" from Rio, edition of January 30, 1921.)PC Filhohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16547063456626761789noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-38193052.post-60710183024415863552018-02-03T00:51:16.080-02:002018-02-03T00:51:16.080-02:00Sobre o criador deste problema, trata-se do profes...Sobre o criador deste problema, trata-se do professor brasileiro Augusto Guilherme Meschick.
