Geometria – Dois círculos e um quadrilátero

Na figura acima, encontre a razão da área do círculo vermelho para a do círculo azul.

(In the figure above, find the ratio of the area of the red circle to that of the blue circle.)

  1. To start, let’s label some points:
    A, B, C, D: the four vertices of the trapezoid, starting with the top vertex and going counterclockwise

    First, we put this figure onto a coordinate plane so that D is the origin. This means:
    Coordinates of A = (0, 9)
    Coordinates of B = (–7, 4)
    Coordinates of C = (–7, 0)

    First, we calculate the length of segment AB:
    AB = √[(9 – 4)² + 7²] = √74

    Now, we draw segments AC and BD and calculate their lengths:
    AC = √(9² + 7²) = √130
    BD = √(4² + 7²) = √65

    Note that △ABC is inscribed in the red circle and △ABD in the blue circle. These facts will be important later.

    Let’s compute some vectors:
    Vector AB = <–7 – 0, 4 – 9> = <–7, –5>
    Vector AC = <–7 – 0, 0 – 9> = <–7, –9>
    Vector AD = <0 – 0, 0 – 9> = <0, –9>

    We can then use determinants to calculate the areas of △ABC and △ABD:
    Area of △ABC = [(–7)(–9) – (–7)(–5)]/2 = 28/2 = 14
    Area of △ABD = [(–7)(–9) – (0)(–5)]/2 = 63/2

    For a triangle inscribed in a circle, this formula is used to calculate the radius of that circle:
    radius = abc/(4 * area of triangle), where a,b,c are the lengths of the triangle’s sides

    Using this formula, we can calculate the radii of the two circles and their ratio (where r₁ is the radius of the red circle and r₂ is the radius of the blue circle):
    r₁ = (AB)(BC)(AC)/(4 * area of △ABC) = (√74)(4)(√130)/56 = 4√9620/56 = √9620/14
    r₂ = (AB)(BD)(AD)/(4 * area of △ABD) = (√74)(√65)(9)/126 = 9√4810/126 = √4810/14
    r₁/r₂ = (√9620/7)/(√4810/7) = √2

    Let’s call the area of the red circle A₁ and the area of the blue circle A₂. Thus:
    A₁/A₂ = πr₁²/πr₂² = r₁²/r₂² = (r₁/r₂)² = (√2)² = 2

    Thus, the ratio of the area of the red circle to the area of the blue circle is 2:1.

    My answer → 2:1
