A posição acima, criada por Max Bezzel em 1849, é a solução ótima para um famoso problema de xadrez: "Posicione as oito peças principais no tabuleiro de tal forma que elas tenham o maior número possível de movimentos". Há exatamente 100 movimentos possíveis na posição: 8 pelo Rei, 23 pela Dama, 14 por cada Torre, 13 por cada Bispo, 8 por um Cavalo e 7 pelo outro Cavalo. Em 1899, Edmund Georg Hermann Landau provou matematicamente no Der Schachfreund que esta é a posição com o maior número possível de movimentos.
(The position above, created by Max Bezzel in 1849, is the optimal solution to a famous chess problem: "Place the eight major pieces on the board so that they have the most possible moves". There are exactly 100 possible moves in the position: 8 by the King, 23 by the Queen, 14 by each Rook, 13 by each Bishop, 8 by one Knight and 7 by the other Knight.
