Xadrez Bastilha

Today, July 14, is the 226th birthday of the Storming of the Bastille, event that resulted in the liberation of political prisoners in Paris and is a symbol of the French monarchy's fall. In honor of the day, I explain, below, the rules of Bastille Chess, a variant of the game developed by members of the Notre Dame Catholic School Chess Club, in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada.

Board: the standard 64-square board, with 8 lines and 8 columns.
Setup: the same as in standard chess, with all 32 pieces set up in their normal opening positions.
Pieces: the same as in standard chess, with their regular moves too. The King, however, is not considered a special piece - it can, for example, be captured. Castling is allowed, Pawns promote, and en passant captures are also permitted.
Rules: a player wins by being the first to expel his/her opponent from his/her four-square Bastille (defined as the d1-e1-d2-e2 squares in the White case, and the d8-e8-d7-e7 squares in the Black case). Kings are not special - they can be captured, and the game continues even after that happens.

Xadrez Projetivo

(This post has been copied from the excellent Futility Closet. In Projective Geometry, every family of parallel straight lines intersects at an infinitely distant point. Chess problem composers in the former Yugoslavia have adapted this idea for the chessboard, adding four special squares "at infinity".)

(A Queen on a bare board, for example, can zoom off to the West (or East) and reach a square "at infinity" from which she attacks every rank on the board simultaneously from both directions. She might also zoom to the North (or South) to reach a different square "at infinity"; from this one she attacks every file simultaneously, again from both directions. Finally she can zoom to the Northwest or Southeast and attack all the diagonals parallel to a8-h1, or zoom to the Northeast or Southwest and attack all the diagonals parallel to a1-h8. These four "infinity squares", plus the 64 in the regular board, make up the field of play.)

Você consegue encontrar a solução?

(Following the rules of this Projective Chess, Nenad Petrovic created the problem below, published in Matematika Na Shahmatnoi Doske. White is to play and give checkmate in two moves. Can you find the solution?)

Xadrez - Mate em 2! (Kuznecov & Plaskin)

Kuznecov/Plaskin, Mathematics and Chess (Miodrag Petkovic), 1997.

(A different problem: imagine that the board has been rolled into a cylinder, so that the a- and h-files are adjacent, and pieces can move across the boundary. How can White give checkmate in two moves?)
